Seasonal Direct Mail: A Campaign Calendar for European E-Commerce

Timing matters in direct mail. Unlike email, postcards take 2–5 days to arrive — so you need to plan ahead. A well-timed seasonal postcard campaign can drive significant revenue by reaching customers at the moment they're ready to buy. Here's a month-by-month guide to the key European shopping events for direct mail.

January – March: New year and recovery

January sales across Europe drive high purchase intent. Send win-back postcards in early January to catch post-holiday lapsed buyers. Valentine's Day (February 14) works for fashion, beauty, and gift brands. Easter timing varies (March–April) but is significant in Southern and Central Europe. International Women's Day (March 8) is a major shopping event in Poland and parts of Eastern Europe.

April – June: Spring and summer prep

Spring is a strong period for outdoor, sports, and fashion brands. June sales (Les Soldes in France) are one of the biggest shopping events in Southern Europe. End-of-season clearance postcards with exclusive early access for existing customers perform well. Midsummer (late June) is significant in Scandinavia.

July – September: Summer and back-to-school

July sales across Southern Europe (Saldi in Italy, Rebajas in Spain). Back-to-school (La Rentrée in France, September across Europe) drives purchases in family-oriented categories. This is also a strong period for post-purchase thank-you campaigns following summer orders. Consider sending VIP early-access postcards for autumn collections.

October – December: Peak season

The biggest quarter for e-commerce. Singles' Day (November 11), Black Friday (late November), and Cyber Monday drive massive volumes across Europe. Send Black Friday postcards 5–7 days in advance. Sinterklaas (December 5, Netherlands/Belgium) and Christmas drive gift spending. Pre-Christmas win-back campaigns should mail by December 10 at the latest to arrive in time. Three Kings Day (January 6) is significant in Spain.
